Hockey Stick Flex Guide: How to Choose the Right Flex

The right flex helps you load the shaft, release the puck cleanly and keep control through passes and shots. The number printed on a stick is a stiffness rating: lower numbers bend more easily, while higher numbers feel stiffer.

A practical starting point

A common starting guideline is roughly half your body weight in pounds. A 160-pound player might begin around an 80 flex. Treat that as a baseline, not a rule. Strength, technique, stick length and shooting style all change the answer.

Choose lower flex when…

  • You want the shaft to load with less force.
  • You rely on quick snapshots and wrist shots.
  • You are still developing shooting mechanics.
  • You cut the stick only slightly or use it at full length.

Choose higher flex when…

  • You lean heavily into shots and passes.
  • You want a more rigid feel during battles and hard catches.
  • You are a stronger or heavier player who regularly over-flexes softer shafts.
  • You add an extension, which can make a stick play softer.

Stick length changes effective flex

Cutting a stick makes it feel stiffer because there is less shaft available to bend. Adding length generally makes it feel softer. If you normally cut several inches, consider starting lower than your target feel. Make length changes before judging a flex.

Position is not the final answer

Defencemen do not automatically need the stiffest stick, and forwards do not automatically need soft flexes. A puck-moving defenceman may prefer a quicker-loading shaft. A power forward may prefer more resistance. Pick for your mechanics and the situations you play most often.

How to test your flex

  1. Set the stick to your normal playing length.
  2. Take wrist shots, snapshots and one-timers—not just hard slapshots.
  3. Notice whether the shaft loads naturally or requires you to force it.
  4. Check puck control and pass reception as well as shot speed.
  5. If the stick feels dead and difficult to load, go softer. If it feels unstable or collapses through the shot, go stiffer.

SGS recommendation

Start near half your body weight, adjust for stick length, then choose the flex that loads reliably under game-speed movement. The best flex is the one you can use repeatedly—not the stiffest number you can bend.
