“18K” and “24K” describe carbon-fibre tow sizes—the number of filaments grouped in each bundle. They influence the look and handling of the material during manufacturing, but the larger number is not automatically a universal measure of stick quality.
What the K number means
K means thousand. An 18K tow contains roughly 18,000 carbon filaments; a 24K tow contains roughly 24,000. Larger tows create a broader weave appearance and can change how efficiently material is laid into a mould.
What players may notice
In a finished hockey stick, feel comes from the complete laminate: fibre grade, resin, orientation, wall thickness, shaft geometry, blade construction and quality control. Tow size is only one variable.
- 18K construction: can support a balanced, responsive layup with a tighter visual texture.
- 24K construction: can support efficient material coverage and a bolder carbon pattern.
Either can be engineered to feel light, stiff, lively or damped. The final design matters more than the label by itself.
Weight versus durability
Reducing weight usually means removing material or using more efficient fibre placement. Durability depends on where that material remains and how impact-prone areas are reinforced. A very light stick is not automatically fragile, and a heavier stick is not automatically stronger.
Release and puck feel
Shaft release is controlled heavily by flex profile, wall design and fibre orientation. Blade feel depends on the blade core and face construction. Carbon tow contributes to the system, but it does not determine kick point or puck feel on its own.
How to compare two carbon sticks
- Match length and flex before testing.
- Compare balance in the hands, not only scale weight.
- Take the same shot types with each stick.
- Receive firm passes and test blade feedback.
- Check whether the shaft returns consistently after repeated loads.
- Choose the response that fits your mechanics, not the largest number in the product name.

Choose based on desired feel, budget and the complete product specification. The 18K and 24K Marksman options use different carbon constructions, but both should be evaluated as complete sticks. If possible, compare them at the same flex and length.
